Tutoring youth with AmeriCorps inspired me to work where education meets service. At the University of California, Berkeley, everyone I met did community service. Once I heard about Peace Corps, it was only a matter of time until I became a volunteer. Living and working abroad in Cambodia while serving my country gave me purpose, showed me possibilities, and helped me become a caring and responsible adult. But when I first began my term, I had to be a child again—take baby steps, learn a new language, and adapt to a new environment. As an English Teacher/Teacher Trainer I provided much-needed training and helped run leadership workshops inclusive of girls and women. In Peace Corps Cambodia, we emphasize SEEDS—service, education, empowerment, development, and sustainability. Our trainings turned into projects and eventually grew literal seeds into a school garden for students to enjoy for years to come.
