Jaimee's Story

When I signed up to become an AmeriCorps member, I took a chance to be a part of something larger than myself. Growing up 500 miles from Knoxville, Tennessee I had no connection to CAC AmeriCorps or East Tennessee except for a coworker, a past CAC AmeriCorps alumni. My coworker talked about her service and how it helped her find her passion and purpose in life. After many stories and a whole lot of research, I decided it was the right time in my life to take a leap and apply for service.

After an interview with CAC AmeriCorps and a site interview, I realized my leap was turning into reality. I took the time to get to know more about East Tennessee. Before I knew it, I was given a chance to make a difference.

Deciding to move away from family and friends to a completely different part of the country was scary and exciting all at the same time. I had no idea what my year of service would look like or how I would become a part of the community I was about to call home.

Serving as a CAC AmeriCorps Member in Knoxville, TN in 2018 with Volunteer East Tennessee, a volunteer center that connects non-profits to volunteers and engages their community in new and exciting ways, I gained valuable skills that I continue to use to help shape my future and my community.

My service as an AmeriCorps State & National Member was one of the best decisions I have made. I’ve grown as a person, learned about the hardships that many people face day in and day out, explored a beautiful part of the country, and formed friendships that will continue to last a lifetime. I gained more than experience; I gained a family and a second home with CAC AmeriCorps.
