Mr. Abernathy serves as the Executive Director. He started his career in the military when he attended the U.S Military Academy at West Point and served nearly seven years on active military service. Mr. Abernathy then spent over 15 years in the private sector as a commercial banker in New York and Indiana, and later founded a sole proprietor consulting business. He remained active in the Army Reserve and National Guard serving as commander at the company, battalion, and brigade level. In 2003, Mr. Abernathy returned to active military duty in the U.S. Army and served in leadership positions at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and in Baghdad, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. A native of Indiana, Mr. Abernathy returned to the state in 2010 to be Chief of Staff of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. In 2015, he was appointed the 25th Commissioner of the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) by former Governor of Indiana, Michael Pence. While BMV Commissioner, Mr. Abernathy also served on the International Board of the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators. He has a Bachelor of Science degree from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, a Master of Management from Oakland City University, and a Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College.
