Former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and Ambassador Susan Rice to Discuss Service in National Commission on Military, National, and Public Service’s Culminating Event

Posted: June 23, 2020

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Commission on Military, National, and Public Service will host its culminating event, Inspired to Serve: A Path Forward, on June 25 at 2:00 p.m. EDT – featuring 12 thought leaders and champions of service.

The program will include opening remarks from Commission Chairman Joseph J. Heck, fireside chat interviews with Former Secretary of Defense and Director of the CIA Leon Panetta and Ambassador Susan E. Rice, and two panel discussions. The first panel, A Path to Every American Inspired and Eager to Serve, will be a discussion with thought leaders on building a culture of service in America. The second panel, Taking Action to Advance Service in America, will be a discussion with key government and non-governmental leaders discussing the path forward for the Commission’s recommendations. Chairman Heck will then make brief closing remarks.

The National Commission on Military, National, and Public Service, created in 2017, is the first entity in history charged with conducting comprehensive and holistic review of all forms of service to the Nation. Recognizing the value in promoting a larger ethos of service in the United States, the late Senator John McCain and Senator Jack Reed championed the establishment of this bipartisan 11-member Commission.

After two and a half years of research, public hearings, and conversations with Americans across the country, the Commission released its final report, Inspired to Serve, to the Congress, the President, and the American people March 25, 2020. With 164 recommendations, the report provides a bold vision and comprehensive plan to reform selective service and strengthen all forms of service to address critical national security and domestic needs, invigorate civil society, and strengthen American democracy. The Commission’s work will conclude in September 2020.
