WASHINGTON, D.C. — Chairman Joe Heck of the National Commission on Military, National, and Public Service released the following statement on the MLK day of service:
“As Chairman of the National Commission on Military, National and Public Service, I thank Americans from coast to coast and all walks of life who are stepping forward today to participate in volunteer service activities to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. These volunteers, including commissioners and staff, are working to strengthen their communities and address challenges we face locally and at the national level.
“Dr. King’s teaching that ‘Everybody can be great because anybody can serve’ is a sentiment at the core of the Commission.
“In a nation of more than 329 million people, the extraordinary potential for service is largely untapped. On today’s congressionally-designated Day of Service, it is a time to reflect on what America can accomplish when people give their time and talents to their fellow citizens for the common good.
“Our nation is at its best when we are striving toward shared goals with a common vision. The Commission’s goal is that one day every American will be inspired and eager to serve. I hope you join in making that vision a reality, starting with this MLK National Day of Service.”
